Some of you who may have been following my blog for a while will know that November is National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. The full challenge is to write 50,000 words in a month, and while I’ve done this several times, in the last couple of years I’ve been more modest in my goals.
This year I’m aiming for 30,000 words. I’m well on my way to getting there, and as long as I keep it up while I’m on a short holiday next week, and for the remainder of the month, I should be set to smash my word count.
Being in the habit of writing every day is something I do on and off. Most of the time, I can’t manage it, with all my other hobbies, work and friendship commitments, but for a month sprint, it’s easier to encourage myself to do the work. Last month I watched a horror movie every day for October, in April I did the National Poetry Writing Month challenge of a poem a day. I enjoy the format of short challenges, my desire for novelty helps keep me motivated for the month, and the set end date helps it to feel manageable.
Is anyone else doing a writing challenge in November? I’d be keen to hear about your goals, and how you’re doing achieving them.
