Some of you may be aware that as one of the many things I do with my time, I’m a life model (for art classes). I’ve been modelling since 2014, and I was also heavily involved in running the Life Models’ Society from 2015 and I was President from 2020-2023.
The Life Models’ Society (the LMS) is a collective of models, run entirely by volunteers, who work to promote the welfare and dignity of life models in Melbourne. The LMS runs workshops for aspiring models and members, and advocates to improve the pay and working conditions of life models.
The LMS has been invited to present at a symposium co-hosted by The Drawing Foundation and The Courtauld. I’ll be presenting with the current President, Asa. Our session is on the Life Model as Labourer and Artist. It’s an area I feel especially passionate about, especially with the issues I became aware of in my role at the LMS and as a model.
I encourage anyone who is interested to attend the session virtually. There are a couple of other virtual sessions that also look interesting. Unfortunately the sessions are on London time, so they are quite late at night for a Melbourne audience, but they will be recorded for access at a later time.
